Leveraging Institutional capacity for eFfective graduate student Training
SciComm LIFT
About
Scicomm LIFT is an NSF-funded research program (award abstract # 2429657) that will enhance graduate students’ ability to communicate science effectively and ethically. It will also produce materials to overcome barriers that currently prevent embedding science communication (scicomm) training in graduate programs.
Our study will:
-
Conduct a nationwide survey of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) graduate students, recent graduates, and the people who train them. What scicomm training do students receive and how does that prepare them for their careers?
-
Test ethical scicomm training interventions and assess longitudinal impacts of such training across numerous institutions. We will evaluate the effects of three modes of scicomm training in graduate courses: a one-hour workshop, a one-week module, and a full-semester course.
-
Assess how to help integrate effective and ethical scicomm training into the broader community. We will offer three types of coaching programs to scicomm instructors and trainers, then share widely the materials and techniques that best support the integration of effective and ethical scicomm training into graduate programs.
Join our email list if you are:
-
a STEM graduate student or recent graduate who wants to take our survey
-
an instructor or curriculum specialist who wants to take our survey
-
a graduate-level STEM instructor who wants a scicomm intervention in your class
-
a scicomm instructor or trainer who wants to join a free coaching program
